Game Mechanisms - Discoveries

  • I have recently spent a lot of time playing Pixel Dungeon and I have found many things that would be quite useful to players.  I also have many unanswered questions that require help of other Dungeoneers such as yourself!

Here I hope we can discuss/debate various mechanics and rules of the game... and any new discoveries or tips we find before officially posting it to the wiki.  For example, we know that wearing two rings of haggling does not reduce the shop price further, but does this mean that rings of haste or accuracy do not stack also?  Hopefully questions like these can be brought up and answered, and we can help expand and make this wikia as accurate and complete as possible.

P.s. All other rings besides the ring of haggling appear to stack.

Good luck Dungeoneering, may the Amulet of Yendor be yours!

    • Hey man! Awesome post! I'm really glad you've desided to join the forum. Indeed there are a lot of things that need to be discovered about the game. I will try and find whats the deal with the rings. If I have any results I'll post them here.

      Good luck to you too!

    • I have a question... does anyone know if shop items spawn stacked on each other?  I am asking this because on my 15'th round at level 11, the shopkeeper spawned in a room so small, that the Ankh was not generated :(.   I am hoping it is under one of the items for sale!

Edit: The Ankh was underneath a scroll of mapping I had to buy in the bottom right corner of the shop. Phew!

    • Welcome. I found something pretty interesting...

By using a Wand of Flock and a Wand of Amok, you can summon the sheep, and then use the Wand of Amok on the monster, and the monster will continually attack the sheep while you get free hits on it.  This is particularly useful for boss fights!  Also, electricity can pass through sheep...so it is possible to trap monstes up against a wall with a wand of flock and then use a wand of lightning to damage them.

I feel like this may be irrelevant, but as a side note, sheep can be cursed with wand of amok, slowed, and teleported like any other creature.  Sadly, sheep do not attack when cursed with wand of amok, I would have loved to see that haha!

Rings appear to stack(besides ring of haggler)...

With two rings of mending + 2, natural regeneration is more than doubled.  Without the two rings, the hp regen appears to be +1 per 10 ticks(wait actions).  With 1 ring the hp regen is +1/7 ish, and with 2 rings, the hp regen is a little faster than +1/5.  The rings appear to have no effect when starving.

    • Imagine two +3 rings of evasion. You'll be unstopable! :D

btw something happened to the general discussion thread and it disappeared so I made a new one. If I can't find where the original general discussin is I'll have to move this over to the new one because in time we're going to lose this discussion.

This is amazing.   iv'e already killed the dwarf king if i were to starve myself to death on his floor with an ankh in my inventory would he respawn so i could do this?

    • Yes... if you die with an Ankh in the boss room, then yes he will respawn and you will lose all non-equipped items and appear on level 19.

There are only 3 Ankh's in the game though, so you can't do this repeatedly.

I'd say the chances of getting a ring of haggling is about 1 in every 30 theives... That may not seem very low, but it takes a while to fight and kill 30 theives.

    • for the king of the dwarves, i went to level 35. almost 150 to 200 skeletons to get a level ><. i get bored after 800 and i killed the king. it seems to be an forever farming, allowing you to have high stats in the end-game wall of fame ( last patch add). it's quite easy to resist and kill them again and again.

      Few points :

Have a lot of potion in case of danger ( i went with 75 heal potions)

      A good armor ( i went with a +7 plate amor)

A farming weapon (a tier 5 + 3 ) and a regen weapon ( any vampiric weapon if you found one)

+3 tier 5 Weapon may be found on skeleton ( depth 6 to 9), vampiric weapon too.

ring of haste, ring of evasion, ring of cleansing. ( i choose to bring a ring of haste and a ring of evasion)

first, hit the king until he summon 3 skeletons, deal with them and if no problem, hit the king until he has 5% hp. He will summon skeletons for a total of 5 skeletons each time (never more than 5 at the same time in the room)

i stood 3 lines under summoning altars, in the center of the hall, destroying skeleton with my war hammer +3.

to regen ( when under 40% hp) i went in the bottom left or right corner : only 2 skeletons may hit you here. equip your vampiric weapon and hit them until you are full life.

be caution : each skeleton may stun you if they succefully hit you.

None? at all? That seems strange.  I think each floor has the potential to drop 3 special items...  Once I've gotten my third item (scroll of upgrade or potion strength) I never get any more items no matter how many runs I do.

So if I find 2 scrolls of upgrade and 1 strength potion on my first run of the floor, I don't seem to find any more, no matter how many times I redo the floor.  But if I find let's say, 1 strength potion on the first floor run, I may find another strength potion my 2'nd run, and a scroll of upgrade on my 6'th run, but nothing more after that.

Note: These findings are based on Level 6

At least it’s what is written in the code, but the only thing that I can say is “test it yourself!” ;) (or “decompile the code” :p). When writing about the XP farm technique I was pretty sure that this flaw would be corrected, but not so soon. So I guess that you’ll remain the only level 45 for a long time, as level 23 is now the absolute max (unless you have plenty of Potions of Experience). Speaking of level, there’s a badge for reaching level 24, which requires at least one Potion of Experience.

The only way I know for a downgrade to an earlier version is to download the corresponding APK file on a “specialized site” but even if the game is free I don’t think it’s legal, so I cannot name here such a site. (BTW I think that the decompilation I do is not legal either but the only thing I do is retrieving data that can also be found by in-game observation (even if some data would require millions of data points for statistical significance…) so I hope that Watabou won’t sue me. ^^")

    • I have really been trying to beat the (so far) game with the Mage class, and am finding many of my recent play-throughs do not grant me a usable combat wand. I recently made it all the way to the King of Dwarves by upgrading my Magic Missile Wand (default) to +5 and that was not too shabby. Had I attempted that earlier, I would have had many more potions (I held out on upgrading that wand as I was hoping to find something better) and probably beaten the King.

Anyway. I think it's interesting how different a playthrough can be based on what you find. The tactics one may adopt based on the equipment that is found. For example, my latest playthrough I have Wand of Poison and despite it only dealing -2 per turn, I find that retreating works really well. Particularly against Skeletons as I get to avoid the explosion of bones.

Such a great game. I know this isn't the forum for it, but I sure would love to see the ability to have more than one quick-slot, which would be really handy for dual-casting or wand + thrown weapon. It is rare to find two really useful wands sometimes, but when you do, it is annoying to constantly have to go to the backpack to utilize the less essential one.

The discovery I just made is that, when performing a surprise attack (i.e. the enemy did not yet see you (again)) whatever your class, the enemy’s dodge ability is reduced to 0!

        Loading editor
    • On forum of roguelike many already asked for two quick slots but watabou always answered that there wasn't enough space. Somebody else then said that there would enough space on his phone. If the Hero hits the enemy (i.e. if his accuracy roll is greater than enemy’s dodge roll), the Hero performs a damage roll while the enemy performs a reduction roll and the difference D (0 if the difference is negative) is applied to the enemy (HP decreased by D). However, if the Hero is an Assassin performing a surprise attack, D is increased by a random roll in 1 — D (this bonus being 1 if D=0 or 1) before being applied to the enemy, so the Assassin’s ability is statistically equivalent to a +50 % increase (in fact a bit more than 50 % because the bonus range is not 0 — D).

        Loading editor
    • I don't know if everyone has figured this out yet, but if you have a good ring of haste, you can often defeat enemies without getting hit at all!  This is done basically by moving on the turns where both you and the enemies get an action, and attacking on the turns where only you get an action.  For example, ring of haste+5 (The level I usually use) gives you almost 5 turns for every 3 turns the enemies get.  So at this level, you can fight enemies with a pattern of run, run, hit, run, hit, run, run, hit, run, hit, etc.  You may need a couple of turns to figure out where in the cycle you are, but once you have it down, it's awesome!  The enemies will occasionally get a hit on you, because you don't QUITE get 5 turns every 3, but it's still awesome.  Also, with the ring of haste calculations I saw Ethaniel post (I don't remember where), I figured out that this works even better with ring of haste +7 or +8.  With +7, you get very nearly double turns (With a single turn every 20 or so rounds).  With +8, you get slightly more than double turns, so with either of these, you can just alternate running and hitting, and you'll beat monsters easily!  Lastly, if you're going for the "Item of level 12 obtained" badge, you might consider trying to do it with a ring of haste, because a ring of haste +12 will give you over TRIPLE turns! (You'd need some good pre-upgraded equipment to make it work though, because this would use up most of your scrolls of upgrade).  In case you hadn't guessed, I like the ring of haste! :D

        Loading editor
    • I used to think the wand of Regrowth was somewhat useless, until I found out you can farm dewdrops and seeds with it!  I'm sure everyone already knows this, but it's still great!  Easy (but slow) way to heal and get gold!  I love how subsequent uses of the wand put tall grass on ALL the tiles on that floor you zapped, cause otherwise seed/dewdrop farming would just be too slow.

    • Alright, I have a question myself. I'm playing a rogue right now, and I have a +3 leather armor, and a +2 scale armor. The leather armor has a damage reduction of 8 points, and a STR requirement of 8. The scale armor has a damage reduction of 16 (twice that of the leather), and a STR requirement of 13.

Assuming my rogue's STR is high enough (13 points), which is ultimately better for damage reduction? Does the evasion bonus from the super light leather armor overcome the fact that it has half the absorption power of the scale armor? Is that evasion chance hypothetically better later on when evading more attacks is more important than reducing 8 damage?

Just something that I thought I'd bring before the people with knowledge of the backend algorithms.

    • I haven't seen anyone point this out: you can examine the crystal chests to see if what is in them before deciding. It will tell you the item type and color allowing you to avoid or grab wands/rings you've already got. Haven't played as a mage much but I'd think this is very important for them(choosing a wand over a ring/not getting a wand you already have.)

Yep, already got it covered for the "Other items" page (though we do need a picture of a crystal chest still).

It depends on enemy’s accuracy and damage range and on Rogue’s base dodge (hence on his level):

      • if the enemy has low accuracy and high damage range, it’s better to use the leather armor having higher dodge (for Rogue only, as you already know),
      • if the enemy has high accuracy and low damage range, it’s better to use the scale armor having higher damage absorption,
      • if the Rogue has high level, hence high base dodge, the 5 (13-8) dodge points bonus is proportionally lower, decreasing the leather armor advantage.

If you give me your Rogue’s level and the enemy he’ll farm, I’ll do the calculation (idea: writing a wiki template doing the calculation; but there’s more urgent things to do on the wiki…)

Thanks... you've answered my question well enough (i won't make you do a mob by mob calculation :P).

When it comes to armor, is the damage reduction hard and fast? In other words, a scale armor with 16 dmg reduction will always subtract 16 points of damage ftrom all non-magical attacks? If the damage is <= 16, the final output will be 0, and if damage is > 16, the final output will be (dmg - 16)?

I can see how, per each attack, an 8 dmg difference isn't huge... but that adds up quite quickly, I'm sure.

I might hold on to that +3 leather for the evil eyes, though. It shold benefit me more than +2 scale.

        Loading editor
    • As stated in the armor description, the scale armor absorption is “up to 16”: the actual absorption will be a random value in range 0 — 16 (mean = 8).

I totally forgot the magical attacks, where the dodge bonus applies (for Rogues) but not the damage absorption, so the leather armor is indeed always best against them.

    • I’ve noticed a strange problem with burning mobs stepping on flammable terrain in my game. I don’t know what might be the cause, so I’ll post anything possibly pertinent.

I’m playing a freerunner rogue, and my prized possession is a ring of satiety +10 (hunger is no longer a worry!). I’ve gotten as far as the bottom of the mines, but I’m waiting to take on the DM-300 until I have a healthy supply of healing potions, scrolls, and possibly a new weapon (wearing a +2 sword), so I’ve been smiting skeletons, flies and shamans on floor 9. To keep things open so I have a better view of where mobs are, I’ve equipped some incendiary darts to ignite mobs on trampled grass and in doorways. Still, when I strike a mob, the mob burns but the tiles never ignite while I’m still on that level. The strange thing is that if I leave that level, then come back, then the tiles are ignited and burn away, and any further igniting of mobs on flammable tiles works.

I’ll post this on the bugs section of the wiki too...

    • (Please forgive me for grammatical errors; typed with a cellphone.)

Awesome trick found through trial & error:

1.)  Pick Mage.  Start with Knuckleduster.  Find a Scroll of Upgrade at Depth 1 and apply on Knuckleduster, then suicide at Depth 1, with only +1 Knuckleduster equipped.

2.)  Choose Mage again.  Look for Skeletal Remains (keep one zap charge for remains, in-case of Wraith {if Wraith appears, use wand & zap Wraith for insta-gib} ).  If Knuckleduster generates from Skeletal Remains, proceed to #3; if not, start over.  **Knuckleduster will be cursed; however, they maintain a +1 status.  Once another Scroll of Upgrade is used on Knuckleduster, it will then be +2 & uncursed.

3.)  Look for Scrolls of Upgrade at Depths 1 or 2, and apply to Knuckleduster.  (At this point, should be +2 by Depth 3.  And Goo can be defeated, regardless of obtaining Seed of Earthroot; and Goo is met with full HP; and you back off when !!! appears.  When !!! appears, make sure there are 2 cells beween you & Goo.)  Keep trolling around for another Scroll of Upgrade to use on Knuckleduster..  Always choose armor from the Sad Ghost's quest reward, so you can have a half-decent armor against Goo.

4.)  Use every Scroll of Upgrade on Knuckleduster, until it hits +6.  Save one Scroll of Upgrade, to throw into a Well of Transmutation & turn into a Scroll of Weapon Upgrade, to ensure you can upgrade your Knuckleduster with a random enchantment.

5.)  After Goo, focus solely on finding Scrolls of Upgrade & trying to get a Scroll of Weapon Upgrade, by saving one Scroll of Upgrade at all times, in order to throw into a Well of Transmutation.  At Depth-6, there will be a Shop; buy all the Potions of Healing first, then the Weightstone, and then balance your Knuckleduster for Speed.  After the Weightstone is obtained, buy Seed Pouch.  Scrolls are unnecessary with this path, unless you are screwed by cursed rings; then aim for Scrolls of Remove Curse.

6.)  At Depths 7-9, should be a quest to find a Seed of Rotberry, or Corpse Dust.  Always choose Battle wands, unless you already have a Wand of Lightning, or Wand of Firebolt.  If you have at least one Battle wand, choose Non-Battle for a chance at a Wand of Slowness (it will become your favorite wand, due to it halving their movement & attack speed, which is awesome for all the bosses).

7.)  Tips for Tengu:  Have at least 6 Potions of Healing.  If you don't have good armor, or any of the following wands (Slow, Blink, Avalanche), use pots when less than 16 hp because he can hit as high as 18, if you have bad armor.  With Knuckleduster, you can attack him 2x for every one of his.  With Speed-balanced Weightstone, you get 3 attacks per one of his.

8.)  Due to weapon being Knuckleduster, Dwarf Monks cannot knock it out of your hand; and if balanced for speed, you attack faster than monks, and get more hits in than the Dwarf Monks, during a set amount of attack turns.  Once you have at least 14 Str. & +6 knuckles, you hit as high as 22-28; the higher the upgrade & your strength, the higher the damage.  Now is the ***** boss, the King of Dwarves.

9.)  Tips for King of Dwarves:  Carry 2 Potions of Toxic Gas, 1 Potion of Purification, or paralyze and any Slow-effect items.  Use Potion of Toxic Gas before he summons on the first pedestal.  The pedestal allows him to summon Undead Dwarves to fight, and the pedestals are on the left & right side of the room.  If possible, throw a Seed of Dreamweed at a pedestal, and a Potion of Toxic Gas at the seed.  The King of Dwarves will step on the seed & run around in toxic gas, for a long time, going below half HP; rinse & repeat as supplies last, and with paralyze potions.

10.)  FIGHT AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE at DEPTHS 23-24 OR YOU WILL WASTE A LOT OF POTIONS.

11.)  SAVE AT LEAST 3 POTIONS OF INVISIBILITY FOR FINAL BOSS.  AT 25TH DEPTH, USE ONE POTION PRIOR TO MOVING, TO LOCATE EYE.  IGNORE FISTS.  Once you locate eye, throw Potion of Paralytic Gas in Fists' direction, or start hitting the eye to generate Larvae.  Larvae block fists from damaging you, thus you are best friends, once fully surrounded by Larvae & eye.  Watch your HP; & use Potions of Healing, once below 20% HP, to avoid death.  And only focus on hitting the eye.  Once eye dies, fists die too, however, now there is a swam of Larvae (thus 3rd Potion of Invisibility).  Use the potion to hide from the larvae & obtain the key, then run for the exit & win.

NOTE:  This method can be used for all types; and I have won with every single Hero/ine using this method.

And it's a reliable method to win; at least 1 out of every 5, or 6 games.  The only thing that varies is how you deal with situations; your choices & luck of drops.  Enjoy this method.

Currently found most Challenges work with this play-style as well.

Enjoy!  Courtesy of a snob, named Rob.

6 on floor 7-9 should be a quest to find rotberry seed or corpse dust.. always choose combat wand unless you already have a wand of electricty or fire. If you have ateast one combat wand choose noncombat for a chance for a wand of slow ( will become your favorite wand due to it halving their movement and atack speed which is awesome for all the bosses)

7 tips for tenga have at least 6 hp potsif you dont have good armor or any of the following wands ( slow, blink, avalanche) use pots when less than 16 hp because he can hit as high as 18 if you have bad armor with knuckles you can attack him 2x for every one of his with stone speed uovrade you get 3 attacks per one ofhis

8 due to weapon being knuckles monks cannot knock it out of your hand and if uovraded with speed you attack faster than monks and get more hits in than monks during a set amount of attack turns, once you have at least 14 str and +6 knuckles you hit as high as 22-28, the higher the upgrade and your str the higher the hit. Now is the bitch boss the undead dwarf king...

The switches create undead hirdes to fight and the switches are raised pkatfores to the left and right side of the room if possible thriw dream seed on a switch and a potion of toxic gas on top of seed... dwarf king steps on seeds and runs around in toxic gas for a long time going below half hp rinse repeat as supplies last and with paralyze potions
